Things are going from bad to worse for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Already hammered by the injury bug heading in, the Leafs lost defenceman Jake McCabe to injury on Saturday night in Montreal against the Canadiens.
McCabe was injured with an upper-body injury, after taking a puck in the face in the second period. From a certain angle on the telecast, it appeared the puck hit the 32-year-old defenceman right in the jaw, leaving many wondering if he potentially broke his jaw on the play.
Through 21 games this season, Maple McCabe had produced three goals and seven assists, and quickly was becoming Toronto’s top defenceman. His well-rounded game has been on display the entire season, and was a big reason why the team signed him to a long-term contract extension last year.
McCabe’s averaging over 21 minutes of ice-time per game, and is as tough as nails, so you know if he’s going to be missing any time, he’s going to be extremely frustrated by the news.
The Maple Leafs are in one right now with injuries as they’re currently playing with Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies, Nicolas Roy, and defencemen Chris Tanev and Brandon Carlo. Add in Anthony Stolarz, and the injured list rivals the lineup on the ice.
