The Pittsburgh Penguins are going to be without one of their best players for awhile, as the team announced they’ve placed Evgeni Malkin on the injured reserve.

Malkin is considered week-to-week at this point, due to an upper-body injury. At this point, it’s not clear where Malkin suffered the injury, as he missed the Penguins previous contest against the Dallas Stars on Sunday, and now finds himself on the IR.

Malkin has enjoyed quite the comeback season in Pittsburgh this season, and is forcing management’s hand at landing himself a contract extension to stick around to finish out his career, which certainly wasn’t the narrative heading into this season.

The future hall-of-famer has recorded 29 points in 26 games this season, and it could be the first time in three seasons he’s recorded a point-per-game pace.

With Malkin out of the lineup, look for rookie Ben Kindel to get a heavy workload to push his potential, and be given some more ice time without the Penguins number-two center.
