Luke Schenn Embraces Being a ‘seller’ as we get into trade season is not the position the Winnipeg Jets expected to find themselves in this year. But here we are. The Jets are dead last in the entire NHL with just 35 points, a full 11 points back of a Wild Card spot and seven other teams ahead of them.
With that, some of their veterans are becoming trade candidates. None make more sense than Luke Schenn. A two-time Stanley Cup winner, the rugged, stay-at-home defenseman is a natural for any playoff teams in need of a physical, depth d-man.
Schenn has been traded at the deadline in two of the last three NHL seasons, so this wouldn’t be new territory for him. And according to insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, he is indeed open to yet another deadline move:
The interesting thing is what we’re starting to hear about Luke Schenn. He just played his 1,100th game (Tuesday night). I don’t know if that’ll be his last with the Jets. There is some word we’ve been given that Schenn wouldn’t mind a change of scenery, he would be open to a move… He hasn’t asked for a trade, but he’s open to a change and that’s something the Jets are monitoring now.
The fact that he’s been a healthy scratch in four of the Jets’ last eight games probably makes it a lot easier for Schenn to want to move on, not to mention the possibility of getting back to the playoffs (which isn’t going to happen in Winnipeg).
Schenn was a strong addition for the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 2023 trade deadline. In 11 playoff games, he posted a +8 rating and dished out 54 hits while blocking 17 shots. The Leafs wanted to re-sign him in free agency that summer, before he landed a three-year deal with the Nashville Predators. Cap issues prevented the Leafs from being able to offer Schenn what he was looking for.
Nashville then traded him to the Jets last season at the deadline in 2025.
Schenn, 36, was a part of two Stanley Cup winners in Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021.
