Philip Broberg: The St. Louis Blues have locked up a key piece of their core, and a pillar on their blueline.

The Blues announced on Saturday they’ve signed defenceman Philip Broberg to a six-year contract extension worth $8 million AAV. Broberg, 24, was a pending restricted free agent at season’s end, and now both sides have some serious security moving forward.

The Blues see Broberg as a key to success on their back end and he’s turning himself into a top-pair defenceman, and was recently named to Team Sweden’s Olympic team. It’s been a wild turn of events for Broberg early on in his NHL career, Philip Broberg as the Blues brought him in back in 2024, after signing both Broberg and Dylan Holloway to offer sheets, which the Edmonton Oilers didn’t match.

Broberg has recorded two goals and 14 points this season and in his young career, has recorded 10 goals and 43 points in 113 games, split between the Oilers the Blues. He’s quickly becoming a shut-down force alongside Blues’ veteran Colton Parayko, averaging 23:18 of ice-time per season.

Per the team’s release:

This season, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound defenseman has appeared in all 45 games, recording 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) and six penalty minutes. Last year, he posted 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in 68 regular-season games while leading Blues defensemen with a plus-21 rating.  Overall, Broberg has played in 194 career regular-season games, Philip Broberg totaling 56 points (12 goals, 44 assists), 32 penalty minutes and a plus-16 rating.

He has also appeared in 27 career postseason games, including 10 in 2023-24 to help the Edmonton Oilers reach the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

Originally drafted eighth overall by the Oilers in 2019, the Örebro, Sweden native was recently named to Team Sweden’s roster for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
